Student Council Executive Bd. Raises $5,000 for Mercy Girl Effect

The Executive Board is proud to announce that we have reached our goal of $5,000 for the Mercy Girl Effect Project focusing on girls’ education in Nairobi, Kenya.

This past year, we held many events to raise money for this foundation including our Mount dances, the Powderpuff football game, our Chick-Fil-A fundraiser, and various Catholic Schools week activities, which allowed us to incorporate this important cause into our Catholic education. We are so grateful to the Mount community for their unwavering support. We would also like to thank Sister Deirdre for her commitment to the Sisters of Mercy and this project!

This donation will provide opportunities for so many young girls who have not had access to stable education due to various factors-- including violence, environmental disasters, and displacement. With the “school in a box,” the Mercy Girl Effect Project will deliver the right to education to many young girls in Kenya. We, as the 2023 Executive Board, are so grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness about this dire issue in our world.
Ruth Anne Munroe, Director of Campus Ministry and Student Council Moderator, said, “I am thankful to the Student Council Executive Board for their leadership in student council, and for their creativity, determination, and drive to promote this year’s Mercy Girl Effect Campaign: One Team-One Dream: Providing Education for ALL Girls.”

Too often we take for granted the availability we have to education and do not realize how inaccessible if is for families struggling with poverty," added Mrs. Munroe. "Around the world, 129 million girls are out of school. In countries affected by conflict, girls are more than twice as likely to be out of school as girls living in non-affected countries. By promoting this awareness and driving the fundraising efforts, the Executive Board was able to raise $5,000 for this project. Their hard work this year is going a long way to make a difference to young girls and families in the world."

"A check will be sent to Sister Deirdre Mullan, RSM a founding member of the NGO The Mercy Girl Effect (MGE)," she said. "I am also thankful to the Mount Saint Mary students, faculty, and staff who supported the project through their involvement in our fundraising activities and through their financial contributions. I am so proud of the Executive Board and our school community for their achievements.”
