Writing Lab

As a testament to their love of learning, Mount Saint Mary Academy students are eligible to attend free workshops offered through the English Department’s Writing Workshop Series which began in the fall of 2019.

 

Mount English teachers, with the assistance of members of the National English Honor Society, facilitate the workshops in the Academy’s Writing Lab located on the top floor of the St. Joe’s building.

 

One attendee remarked that during the workshops, “Students can really develop their own voices as writers as they adapt the advice they’re given to suit their needs and styles, and we can pool our knowledge and share our thinking with each other; we all come out as stronger writers as a result.”

 

Workshops offered in the Writing Workshop Series include thesis development, topic sentences, intros & conclusions, selecting appropriate evidence for analysis, quote integration, word choice and syntax, developing tone, transitions (within and between paragraphs), and, finally, grammar and punctuation.

 

When the Writing Lab isn’t being used for workshops, students are encouraged to use it as a space to hold peer academic discussions on all subjects, not just English/writing. If you were to stumble into the room during one of the sessions, you’d discover on the whiteboard formulas about trajectory from yesterday’s physics class or outlines for and arguments about Theology projects. The old saying is that to teach something is to learn it twice; here, students can teach each other and bring a sense of empathy and enlightenment to all involved.
